Show Me The Wonder, St. Anne’s Well Gardens, Storm, Storm Cloud

River of Calm

I used to say that a river of calm
was running through me –
this was on those days
when I didn’t feel demented –
today there’s a sluggish tide
slapping around inside

out to sea
ships and boats are anxious
we don’t like the black ocean
of unknown depth
that hurls and heaves
that swallows men
who have no anchor

Distance

we hurtled towards each other
– a steady trajectory
in slow motion –
it had been a long lonely time
we’d had many near collisions
over several years
when it finally happened
we already new each other –
we were a pair of magnets

the sky went white
frost was silver on the ground
I pictured cattle in their shed
horses stamping,
also foxes
badgers and birds
dark against snow

you came round the corner
jumped into my arms
tonight I saw distant hills as I cycled home
grey evening, end of summer –
once you were that far away
now we are face to face
